In December 2007, Children's Hospital broke ground on the Patient Care Pavilion — a much-needed 279,000 square foot facility due to be completed in 2010. The Friends of Scott Foundation has pledged $50,000 to help build a new Bone Marrow Playroom inside the Pavilion, so children undergoing bone marrow transplants can play freely without worry of infection. My daughter, Emily and I first met Carmen and Friends of Scott in January of 2005. Emily was diagnosed with Leukemia on January 6th, just 2 days before her 2nd Birthday. Emily had been in the Hospital for several weeks receiving chemo when Friends of Scott brought her some PJ's. Emily loved the blue pj's with kittens on them. During the 2 1/2 years that Emily was receiving Chemo we would often see Carmen and Friends of Scott at the hospital giving the children books and snacks or doing crafts with them while they waited for their chemo treatments. Emily would always be so excited when she saw Carmen and the Friends of Scott volunteers at the hospital.
Emily finished her Chemo in August of 2007 and we both decided that we wanted to volunteer with Friends of Scott and help the other children with Cancer. We started volunteering helping with Cafe Con Leche and doing crafts with the parents and Children. One day Emily heard Carmen say that Friends of Scott was going to help the Hospital by building a new playroom for the children. When we got home that day, Emily got out one of our plastic food containers and decorated it. She wrote Friends of Scott on it. When I asked her what it was for she said it was to collect money for Friends of Scott to help build the new playroom. For weeks everytime anyone came over to our house, Emily would ask them if they had any money (or change) that they could donate to Friends of Scott for the Playroom. When the container got so full that she could barely carry it we brought it to the hospital and gave it to Carmen for the new playroom.
